Volunteering: Meals on Wheels Plus

As excited as I am for the opportunity to travel and experience new things, I am equally excited for the opportunity to give back to the communities I visit. I owe my love for volunteering to my mother, who signed us up for many volunteer projects in our community when I was a kid. The work done by volunteers across the country is incredibly valuable and without volunteers many non-profit organizations who help build and support communities would not be able to achieve their goals.

I encourage everyone to get involved as a volunteer. Whatever it is you are passionate about- art, reading, cooking, sports, animals, nature, helping others- I can almost guarantee there’s a volunteer opportunity out there suited perfectly to you. Many organizations can accommodate families and groups. I can’t think of a better team building activity for an office, group of friends, or family than to volunteer together for a good cause. Unfortunately, I haven’t been involved with volunteering much lately and one of the goals I’ve set for myself during my year of traveling is to volunteer more often. Luckily, my sweet husband is supportive and has pledged to volunteer by my side.

For the first volunteer project of our trip we took a shift working in the kitchen with Meals on Wheels Plus. Meals on Wheels Plus serves the greater Abilene area preparing and delivering approximately 1,100 meals daily to senior citizens and other eligible adults. Their dedicated team of staff and volunteers service 75 daily routes, Monday through Friday and also support a program to help feed pets.

Meals on Wheels Plus is always looking for volunteers, especially during summer months when they lose some of their college students who typically volunteer during the school year. To learn more about volunteering with Meals on Wheels Plus or to get started, visit their website at www.mealsonwheelsplus.com to download the volunteer registration forms, or stop by their office at 717 N. 10th Street, Abilene, TX 79601, Monday through Friday between 2:00 p.m and 4:00 p.m.
