Sightseeing Central Europe, Part II: Auschwitz-Birkenau

The most heartbreaking and painful sight was the room containing two tons of decaying human hair piled floor-to-ceiling behind a glass wall. The majority of these tattered braids and ponytails came from women and children who were sent to the gas chamber. Their lives were rendered useless and their only redeeming quality was the hair on their heads, which the Nazis harvested to make socks, rope, and textiles. Your heart sinks, your stomach turns, you look away in disbelief. There are no words.
